Margarett Sargent was born into a wealthy Boston family that barely tolerated her artistic ambitions. When she was young, her mentor, George Luks of The Eight, introduced her to the avant-garde that flourished in New York after the Armory Show. Sargent's fierce independent spirit led her to reject the traditional aesthetic of her fourth cousin, John Singer Sargent. During Sargent's brief period of activity, her works were featured in approximately thirty exhibitions. Her paintings remained lost to the public in the families of her original collectors until the publication several years ago of The White Blackbird, a major biography of the artist by her granddaughter, Honor Moore, and the two recent exhibitions of her work at the Davis Museum, Wellesley College, and Berry-Hill Galleries.
