Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900) was the premier second-generation Hudson River School painter and ranks today among the top nineteenth-century American artists. Yet much remains to be discovered about him and, by extension, the art of his time.
This "catalogue raisonné" will be a major stride forward in this respect, aiming to specify Church's lifetime oeuvre of paintings. It will include a comprehensive analytical inventory of the artist's studio paintings and painted sketches, and will cover everything that can be retrieved from historical record.
The emergence of previously unknown works and the re-identification of works already known will make this forthcoming publication an invaluable resource.
