Man of Sorrows Oil on wood(br>25 5/8 x 20 7/8 inches (65 x 53.6 cm)
Dr. Fritz Koreny (in a letter dated July 15, 1997) has identified the present painting as a rare work by the Nuremberg artist Georg Gärtner the Younger. He associates the panel with the signed and dated Man of Sorrows of 1614 in the collection of the University of Göttingen, while dating the present painting somewhat later in the artist's career. Gärtner, one of the leading exponents of the "Dürer Renaissance" freely based his composition on a celebrated lost work by Dürer known through several copies by Hans Hoffmann (to whom the present panel was formerly attributed).
