Old Master Paintings & Drawings IV

Gian Domenico Valentino
(Rome ? - recorded in Imola in 1661 and 1681)

Interior of a Kitchen
Oil on canvas
38 1/2 x 52 1/2 inches (133.5 x 96 cm)
Initialed G.D.V. on the ceramic pot in the center of the composition

The personality of the artist was first brought into focus by Enrico Salerno, as being the same artist who monogrammed various still lives as "G.D.V." and the painter who signed a Saint Helen in the church of San Petronio in Bologna as "Gain Domenico Valentino."Anna Colombi Ferretti subsequently differentiated Valentino from the lesser artist Carlo Antonio Crespi whose kitchen interiors, though of inferior quality, remind one closely of the former.

There can be no doubt as to the authorship of this picture. Comparisons with the two Kitchen Interiors in the Convent of Saint Peter, Perugia and, especially the Kitchen Interior in a private collection, Genoa, all reproduced by Colombi Ferretti, is conclusive. The artist seems to have been inspired by David Teniers' interiors; however, the particularly meticulous rendition of the display of wares differentiates it from the more "atmospheric" effects of the Flemish artist. Rather than being amused by "vulgar" genre subjects, the artist focuses on a virtuoso display (see the fine rendition of the oxidized copper kettles, for example) of the abundance of the well-stocked kitchen, concentrating his efforts on the still life.

We are grateful to Dr. Laura Teza for confirming the attribution.
