Portrait of Lucas de Wael
Oil on canvas
46 1/2 x 34 7/8 inches (118 x 88.5 cm)

During his stay in Genoa, Van Dyck was a guest of the brothers Cornelis and Lucas de Wael, as the famous double portrait in the Pinacoteca Capitolina, Rome, recalls. According to Dr. Christopher Brown, this portrait represents Lucas de Wael, who was a painter and a friend of the artist.

Dr. Susan Barnes will be including this work in the upcoming catalogue raisonnee, in the section on the artist's work in Genoa.
