Berry-Hill is pleased to present Bunny Harvey: Small Matters, an exhibition of new panel paintings by Bunny Harvey and, simultaneously, a Contemporary Group Show of paintings and sculpture by artists from the gallery stable featuring works by Cleve Gray, Judith Belzer, Robert McCurdy, Dennis Masback, Gary Weisman, Doug Trump and Joseph Cals. This dual exhibition opens July 15th and runs through August 23rd.
In Bunny Harvey: Small Matters, scale plays a significant role. Small becomes part subject in this selection of panel paintings as the diminutive size of the panels influence Harvey's choices on perspective and detail. Her signature use of visual angles and symbols leads us through thoughtful landscapes and colorful pure abstractions. Bunny Harvey's willingness to invent, experiment and explore infuses her work with a unique energy.
In the Contemporary Group Show, Robert McCurdy's work, Untitled, 2000, is an arresting photorealistic portrait of a young man in a black shirt set against a white ground. The subject gazes hypnotically out at us, seeming to exist in a hyper-real void, poised to step from the canvas. In Laurel #1, 2002, Judith Belzer's imagery suggesting leaves and vines lead the eye through the work into a romantic, mysterious experience of nature. Cleve Gray's paintings are ablaze with color and energy. Shaman, 1977, is a classic, exuberant gesture painting which catches the colors of a summer sunrise. Dennis Masback's painting, inspired by the syncopated sounds of Jazz, turns the minimalist geometric grid into a color frenzy of girating lines and squares. In Untitled, 2002, patches of color in shades of purple, blue, grey, pink and white are layered over and next to each other, punctuated by lines in various hues resulting in an exhuberant patterned surface.
